In order to discover and act from who we really are, there is an unraveling process that must take place, much like an onion: peeling the layers off one at a time (the layers can represent different conditioning or beliefs we have adopted along the way that we want to let go of) to more and more find out who we are outside of that conditioning, feeling freer to be us.  So it's a tearing down process in order to then build ourselves back up with the pieces that we consciously choose for our building blocks.  This tearing down process can happen in individual therapy, couples, or family therapy.

The expression “all roads lead to Rome” is very appropriate for therapy.  Luckily, therapy has many different modalities and tools within it, as people are so diverse both in personality and what they need in any given moment, giving individuals many options to get where they want to go. What might be helpful to us one year, might not be helpful the next.  As we change, grow, and heal, our needs may become different.  Luckily, there are so many “paths to Rome”, that we can indeed find what works best for us.

It is important to find what works for you, both the modality and the feeling one gets from interacting with their therapist.  I encourage individuals to interview different therapists, get a feel for what it’s like to be with them, and see which therapist “fits” best for them currently (typically therapists will offer a free 20-30 minute consultation).

My style of therapy for this reason is quite eclectic.  I have found through years of experience both in my career as well as in my personal life, that what we need can change as we change and grow.  For that very reason, I draw upon many different modalities and tools to help both my clients and myself.
